MUSIC is an integral part of worship and church life at GVUMC, involving musicians of all ages and levels of training. During our ZOOM worship, music director Eric Howe provides organ, piano, and vocal music from his home, and leads our hymn singing with his own voice (ZOOM worshippers are invited to sing along, but must be muted because of lack of synchronicity in the ZOOM program). Occasional recordings and other music offerings are also used.
When we return to worship in the sanctuary, the Contemplative Worship Service (Sundays, 8:45 a.m.) MAY incorporate congregational singing of songs and Taize-type chants accompanied by piano, with possible vocal or improvisatory wooden flute solos by congregants. Our Traditional Sunday Worship (10:30 a.m.) MAY include congregational songs and hymns with organ or piano, adult and children’s singing and ringing choirs (handbell and hand chimes), or vocal, organ, piano, or instrumental solos and duets. Musical styles range from classical, contemporary, and gospel, to folk, jazz, and world music. Music leadership may also be offered by Music Directors Emeriti Margaret Boothby and Jim Hook (gospel pianist extraordinaire).
The ADULT CHOIR (on hiatus during the pandemic) is open to anyone high school age and older who can carry a tune. Music reading ability is welcome, but not essential. Members range from enthusiastic amateurs through trained professionals. New members are always welcome – give choir a try! (Call Eric at 510-219-1316.) The choir sings 2-3 times a month at the 10:30 service (warmup at 10:00) and rehearses most Thursdays from 7:30-9:00 p.m. (September through May/June) in the Choir Room (lower level.)
The WESLEY RINGERS handbell choir (on hiatus during the pandemic) currently consists of nine adults, with access to five octaves of Schulmerich handbells and four octaves of hand chimes, under the direction of Margaret Boothby (530-273-0186.) It rehearses in the Sanctuary on Thursdays (September through May) from 6:15-7:30 p.m. and plays approximately once a month in the 10:30 service, as well as in many holiday services (Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve, Easter.) New members are always welcome!
CHILDREN’S MUSIC is incorporated in both the Wednesday afternoon HOMEWORK HEAVEN program (2:30-5:00, on hiatus during the pandemic) and ZOOM Sunday School (9:30-10:15 online) and may include choir, chimes, recorders, autoharps, and drums, led by Mary Liebke (530-798-1800) and Margaret Boothby (530-273-0186). The children may sing and/or play in 10:30 worship once a month during the school year, and in special holiday services.
We have a new two-manual Allen organ (which contains nine separate digitally sampled organs) and a magnificent nine-foot Knabe concert grand piano in the sanctuary, known for its fine acoustics, as well as a fine baby grand piano in Wesley Hall. When the building re-opens, both rooms will be available for concerts and recitals – contact Jodi Alba at the church office (530-272-1946) or Eric Howe, music director (510-219-1316) for details.
